votive offering

Metal prayer offering in the form of a Tulusi leaf, also known as the basil leaf.

Such metal offerings are available in a range of metals (silver, gold-plated silver, copper etc.) and forms. Along with the tulasi leaf (holy basil), a plant beloved to Krishna and an embodiment of a Goddess, a devotee would offer other miniature items such as a tulasi plant complete with a pot, small enameled peacocks, parrots, cows etc. In this context, an altar and its paraphernalia is assembled from frequent trips to devotional stores and neighbours often visit each other to admire a new purchase for the altar.
