textile; horse blanket

Saddle cloth roughly in the shape of an axe head comprising four layers of felted wool. The largest layer is on the bottom, with the upper layers decreasing in size. Each of the lower three layers is of a cream wool base with a border of dyed wool which has been layed on top and then felted. It is this coloured border which is visible. On the bottom layer the border is red, on the next it is of orange and on the third red. The top layer is decorated with an elaborate design made of layered strands and pieces of red, black, orange and cream wool with a plain cream edge. A peculiarity of this layer is that a section of it has been left out, so that on one side the decoration covers the underneath layer as well and the cream border is missing. The decoration consists of a central chequerboard design surrounded by two patterned borders. The inner border is a design of interlocking triangles with spotted squares at each corner. The outer border is in a chevron design with details made of plaited black and cream wool felted in. The blanket is lightly felted overall; each layer is felted to the next layer in the centre, but leaving the edges free.
