rice measure; gantang

Cylindrical bronze rice measure, gantang, with handle. Decorated with a circular panel in relief containing an inscription reading:'Inilah gantang perintah Brunei al-malik al-‘adil tarikh fi sanat 1222 (1807/8)', though the second '2' is not clear. 'This is the gantang [officially] ordered [in] Brunei [by] the just ruler, dated the year 1222 (AD 1807/8)'. It may be that the second '2' is a '3' in which case the year would be 1899. The date probably refers to the date the official measure was sanctioned rather than the date of manufacture. Label: Wellcome Trust label.
