Luo tobacco smoking pipe with a clay bowl and iron stem. Tobacco was an expensive imported product before the cigarette market took hold in Kenya in the latter half of the twentieth century. Thus pipes such as this would have been more commonly used by men and women of higher status. Pipe's like this example are designed to be used whilst sitting on a low stool; the clay bowl resting on the ground and the long pipe raised upwards for smoking. Pipe smoking is far less common today as cigarettes are preferred.
