Large rectangular plate of Kosometsuke ware with foliated rim, low foot ring and recessed base. The body is fine white porcelain, covered with clear glaze; foot ring unglazed. Mouth rim painted with iron brown pigment. Decorated with underglazed cobalt blue, overglazed enamel in famille rose palette and gilding. A phoenix is depicted flying above a garden scene with a tree and peonies in front of a fence. The scene is bordered by a narrow band of coin design. There is a wide band at the rim with floral designs within four large cartouches and four roundels, interspersed with wave and diaper patterns within semicircles. Both foot and base are encircled with rings. Four boat-shaped motifs with curvilinear lines are painted in underglazed blue on exterior.
Kosometsuke ware was mainly produced for the Japanese market, with both the shape and decoration made to satisfy Japanese taste. This large plate could possibly have been used for serving sushi.
