appliqué sample (textiles)

Appliqué sample made of blue satin, of stylised circular cloud collar shape with eight points terminating in 'ruyi' heads, bordered by narrow bands of appliqué white, green and yellow silk; decorated with appliquéd designs include the Eight Symbols of the Daoist Immortals (lotus flower, gourd, sword, flute, flower basket, bamboo musical tubes, fan, castanets), one of these is on each 'ruyi' head, and six symbols of the scholars (books, scrolls, archaic bronze, lozenge, 'qin' (zither), fruit bowl) arranged around a circle at the centre which is delineated in narrow bands of appliqué yellow, green and pink silk. Lined with black damask with patterning consisting of flowering branches.
