tobacco container

Tobacco container made from carved buffalo horn with a bead-decorated cowhide lid, suspended on a string of red, blue, green, yellow and orange beads. The beads are threaded on cow's neck ligament. It was manufactured in Nontoto.

Used by elders only. It would have been given to the owner by his father when he became an elder, with beads threaded by his wife. Tobacco is only smoked by the elders. They must share it with others when they gather, and must give some to any other elder who asks for it. It is given from left hand to left hand, in the same way as snuff (1972.71).
