Aman's wooden pipe. The mouthpiece is made of wood and detaches. The bowl has a tin lining. There is a foot at the base of the bowl.
ingawa yabafazi, a mans tobacco pipe, made of umnyamanzi (acacia caffra) wood. Tin lining-ibekile. Mouthpiece (inxindebe) of ubobo wood. Foot at base of bowl-intsupa. Inset of plastic in middle of stem. A piece of wood roughly the length of the pipe is sawn from a block. This is then trimmed down by means of an axe. The carving is done with a knife and the pipe then sandpapered. The hole through the stem is bored from both sides by means of a hand drill and when completed, the hole near the base of the bowl is plugged with a piece of the same wood. The owner regularly smears the pipe with fallow to darken its colour. Made by Mfengu (Fingo) craftsman at East London Museum.
