pipe (narcotics & intoxicants: smoking)

Wooden pipe with pewter inlaid to form zig-zag design. Round bowl with tubular neck lined with metal and mouthpiece of pewter.

This inlayed pipe appears to be missing its separable mouthpiece, which would have been inserted into the flanged end of the pipe-stem. Having had direct contact with its owner’s body, and therefore containing something of their spiritual essence, the mouthpiece would not have been parted with easily. See Shaw, 1938.
