stage of manufacture (woodworking); mug (food service)

The first stage of making a drinking-cup out of plum wood. This stage is a cube of wood with a rectangular piece of wood of the same height protruding from one side. The cube has had patterns drawn and incised on it with compasses, and there is a metal nail in one face of the cube.

The drinking-cup is a vessel used on a journey for drinking water. A great deal of skill is required in making this cup. It is made by amateur craftmen. In the region of Hunedoara the making and using of this cup forms part of an old tradition.
