carrier (land transport: human powered)

Munitions shell carrier used at the Western Front during the First World War. The carrier consists of three long stake and strand basketry cylinders, which have wooden struts around them which keep the cylinders together. The bases of the cylinders are basketry circles with holes at the centre to accommodate the point of a shell; these circular bases are attached to the cylinders with iron wire. The tops of the struts are shaped to accommodate the iron lid, which is riveted to two straps attached to the cylinders at the back which are fastened at the front on iron pegs. The textile straps have leather reinforcing the hole for the peg. A textile strap attached to the back for carrying.
