One of a pair of couplets, this one hung on the right-hand side of the doorpost, reading from top to bottom, made of red satin weave silk with a pink tabby woven cotton lining. Eight large Chinese characters "zhuo shou cheng chun ba min dai de" . The phrase means "the whole of Fujian province has been blessed by your outstanding medical skills". The characters are written in gold paint in the centre, to the right of which are smaller Chinese texts stating that the couplets were used to celebrate the return of Dr John Lyal from Great Britain.
