figure (ritual & belief: representations)

Marble figure of Parvati, seated cross legged upon a pedestal with her two hands together in namaskara mudra, a carved tiger at the base. The figure is painted with gold, red and green detailing. The reverse is plain. Label; ‘School of Art Jeypore’ printed with handwriting.

The namaskara mudra, in which joined palms are raised to the chest, is used by the devotees - the idea of salute and reverence. See, e.g.: GUPTA, S. P. a Shashi P. ASTHANA. Elements of Indian Art: Including Temple Architecture, Iconography and Iconometry. New Delhi: D.K. Printworld, 2007, p. 109.
