Soprano saxophone in B flat, plated brass, wooden mouthpiece (probably original). Fourteen keys, including covered holes. Simple system. Non-automatic octaves. Sounding length (without mouthpiece) is 54.1 cm. Stamped: Adolphe Sax & Cie, Paris (numbered 10183). Also inscribed: Rudall, Rose, Carte & Co., sole agents, 100 New Bond Street, London; and Sax monogram.

The range of saxophones extends from the sopranino downwards to include a contrabass instrument. Sax's influence as an instrument inventor reaches beyond the saxophone. Saxhorns and rival instruments inspired by his designs fuelled the 19th-century English brass band movement. Sax also developed the modern bass and contrabass clarinet.
