jug (containers)

Unglazed spherical jug with a flat base, a single handle and a pulled lip. The jug is painted with concentric circle decoration in red slip.

Luigi Palma di Cesnola, who excavated in Cyprus, in Amathus and Kourion, held two auctions in London (chez Sotheby) in January and May 1871. Later his brother Alessandro Cesnola organised another four auctions in London in 1883, 1884, 1888 and 1889. F. J. Horniman could very well have bought his 'Cyprian vases' from one of these auctions. See P. S. O. Masson 'La dispersion des Antiquités Chypriotes: Les deux collections Cesnola' in 'Cahier du Centre d'Etudes Chypriotes' (p 4-27).
